Consent in Social Technology: Why It's Overdue and What It Looks Like
Consent has transformed healthcare, legal frameworks, and personal relationships. Social technology is the next frontier — and the shift is already beginning.

The concept of consent has done significant work in recent decades. In healthcare, it transformed the doctor-patient relationship from paternalistic authority to collaborative decision-making. In legal frameworks, it sharpened accountability around personal autonomy. In discussions of personal relationships, it shifted the default question from "was there objection?" to "was there active, informed agreement?"
Social technology has largely avoided this reckoning. Most social platforms were designed around implicit, extractive consent — you agreed to broad terms when you signed up, and everything that followed was in scope. The depth of what you were agreeing to was systematically obscured.
This is changing, slowly and unevenly. But the direction of travel matters.
What Consent Has Meant in Social Technology So Far
The dominant model in social technology is what might be called procedural consent. You agree to terms of service. You click through cookie notices. You configure privacy settings that default to maximum sharing. You've "consented" in a legal sense — there's a record of agreement — but the conditions under which that agreement was obtained are questionable.
Informed consent requires understanding what you're agreeing to. It's difficult to argue that terms-of-service agreements — notoriously long, complex, and written for legal protection rather than comprehension — produce genuinely informed consent. Studies on this consistently find that most users don't read them and wouldn't understand them if they did.
Voluntary consent requires that meaningful alternatives exist. When the platforms in question are effectively mandatory for certain social and professional contexts, opting out isn't a realistic choice for many people. The voluntariness is, at minimum, compromised.
The Asymmetry Problem
Social technology has a structural asymmetry problem. The platforms have enormous amounts of information about users — behaviour patterns, preferences, social networks, communication content. Users have very little information about how that data is being used. The consent frameworks ratify this asymmetry rather than addressing it.
There's a parallel asymmetry in social interactions on platforms. Platforms can broadcast your information widely; your ability to control where it goes and who sees it is limited. You can be contacted by people you have no interest in hearing from. Your presence, activity, and connections are visible to audiences you didn't select.
What Genuine Consent Would Require
If we applied the same standards to social technology consent that have been developed in other domains, what would it require?
Comprehensible disclosure. What data is collected, how it's used, who it's shared with, for how long it's retained — presented clearly enough that a non-specialist can understand and make a meaningful choice.
Genuine alternatives. The ability to use the service without accepting surveillance-level data collection. Or, where that's not possible, genuine alternatives to the service that aren't practically unavailable.
Revocability. The ability to withdraw consent and have your data removed, with practical effect rather than nominal acknowledgment.
Specificity. Consent for one use of data (connecting with friends) shouldn't automatically be consent for other uses (advertising targeting, third-party sharing, indefinite retention).
Mutual consent in social interactions. Your contact information, profile, and presence shouldn't be visible to people who haven't also consented to mutual discovery. The right to be found shouldn't override the right not to be found.
Consent at the Interaction Level
Beyond data consent, there's a separate and important question about consent at the level of individual social interactions. When someone can message you, follow you, or discover your presence without any signal of your interest, the platform has created conditions for one-sided social contact.
Mutual consent architectures — where contact only happens when both parties have independently indicated interest — represent a meaningful advance on this. They don't solve every problem, but they create a fundamentally different social environment where initiation is always bidirectional.
The effect is significant, particularly for groups who have disproportionately experienced harassment on social platforms. When one-sided contact isn't technically possible, the conditions for harassment are structurally reduced rather than just discouraged.
The Direction of Travel
GDPR and similar frameworks have started to move the needle on data consent. The "legitimate interest" loopholes are still large, but the direction is toward higher standards.
The more interesting movement may come from user preferences. As understanding of data practices has grown, so has the appetite for platforms that offer genuine privacy rather than privacy theatre. Consent-first design is increasingly a competitive advantage rather than just an ethical requirement.
Social technology designed around genuine consent — at the data level and the interaction level — produces a different experience. Users who know they're protected tend to engage more freely and more authentically. The platform becomes a tool in their service rather than an infrastructure for extracting value from them.
